Water Utility Climate Alliance Mission
The Water Utility Climate Alliance (WUCA) is dedicated to providing leadership and collaboration on climate change issues affecting drinking water utilities by improving research, developing adaptation strategies and creating mitigation approaches to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Origin of WUCA
In January 2007, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission hosted the first national Water Utility Climate Change Summit. The summit, attended by more than 200 water and wastewater utility executives, government officials, climate-change experts and environmental leaders, allowed participants to better understand the potential impacts of climate change on our infrastructure and water supplies and, in part, led to the formation of the Water Utility Climate Alliance.
WUCA Objectives
Serving more than 36 million people in the United States, the objectives of the WUCA are to:
- Improve and expand climate change research so water managers can consider the potential implications climatic changes may have on water resource planning;
- Promote and collaborate in the development of adaptation strategies and tools to reduce the impacts of rising temperature and changes in precipitation patterns on our infrastructure and water supplies; and
- Identify and minimize greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the operations of WUCA member agencies.
WUCA Member Agencies
The WUCA member agencies include some of the nation's largest water providers:
